Choma Orphans

We are proud supporters of the Choma Orphans project - a scheme which provides practical assistance to youngsters orphaned by the HIV/AIDS pandemic in the town of Choma in Zambia.

The project is run by a committee of volunteers in St Andrew's and St Stephen's churches which belong to the United Church of Zambia. The committee selects the most needy children in and around the town of Choma in the Southern Province of Zambia. Many of the children supported by the Choma Orphans Project are orphaned as a result of the AIDS pandemic. They are being cared for by guardians - usually grandparents who are often themselves very poor. The children remain with their families who are given basic food rations every month. Their school fees are paid each year and their school uniforms bought so that they can continue in school. Once on the scheme children remain on it until they complete their education and can support themselves financially. At present, 150 children are being cared for by the Orphans Project out of a total of over 20,000 in the Choma District. This is the most the volunteers can cope with.
